New FAO guidelines on cryopreservation of animal genetic resources.

The animal pillar is involved in the development of the new FAO guidelines on cryopreservation of animal genetic resources.

FAO is currently preparing new guidelines on cryopreservation of animal genetic resources. These guidelines will update the 2012 edition in the light of recent developments in the field of gene banking, including those resulting from the EU-funded IMAGE project coordinated by INRAE, in which FAO was a partner.

As part of the FAO approval process, the guidelines will be presented at the 11th session of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, May 19-21.

Abstract

The Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, adopted in 2007, is the first internationally agreed framework for biodiversity management in the livestock sector. It calls for the development of technical guidelines to support countries in their implementation efforts. Guidelines on the preparation of national strategies and action plans for animal genetic resources were published by FAO in 2008 and are complemented by a series of guideline publications addressing specific technical topics.
These guidelines on cryopreservation of animal genetic resources address Strategic Priority Area 3 of the Global Plan of Action - "Conservation" - and particularly complement the guidelines on in vivo conservation of animal genetic resources to be published in the same series. They have been approved by the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
