RARe: a player in agronomic CRB projects

For over 20 years, agricultural research organizations in France and overseas have been organizing networks around biological resources, with the creation of Biological Resource Centers (BRCs). These Biological Resource Centers (BRCs) are the result of a long evolution in practices and organization. They must meet the highest standards of quality and expertise to meet the needs of research: collection, characterization, conservation and distribution of biological resources.

The resources conserved by the BRCs, members of RARe, constitute both a heritage and an asset for the future. This heritage, the result of years of research, innovation and development, will enable us to carry out future research to meet the major challenges of both fundamental research (knowledge of living organisms, individuals or ecosystems, understanding the dynamics of biodiversity, etc.) and societal research (adaptation to climate change, ecosystem services, food, health, biotechnology, etc.).

The challenge is to enable agriculture and livestock farming to adapt to future conditions and meet the new challenges facing future generations. BRCs are at the heart of numerous research programs designed to explore living organisms and ecosystems, and to enhance biodiversity for agriculture and industry, food, the environment and health.

RARe - Ressources agronomiques pour la recherche
The Grassland CRB led the ImprovLoliumCol activity of the European ECPGR network whose report was published at the end of 2022. The aim of this activity was to secure the long-term maintenance and availability of a set of English ryegrass accessions available in European genetic resource centers and to document them by valorizing the results of a European network research project (GrassLandscape project). The information concerning this set of accessions has been made public by setting up a forage species portal linked to the EURISCO database.
The France 2030 "Agroecology and Digital" program was launched on January 6, 2023 in the presence of Sylvie Retailleau, Minister of Higher Education and Research, and Marc Fesneau, Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty. It is led by INRAE and INRIA for a period of 8 years and a total amount of 65M€.
INRAE CRB Vignes C. Marchal
The Vassal vine collection of the RARe plant pillar represents a unique heritage in the world. The genetic resources include more than 8,500 accessions from over 50 countries. Several factors led INRAE to organize the transfer of this collection, first of all taking into account the medium-term environmental risks. The major asset of this project lies in the grouping on a unique place (Pech Rouge) of research and experimentation activities "from vine to wine" (from genetic heritage to oenological elaboration) thus offering coherence and visibility on its themes.
Discover the activities and resources of the RARe infrastructure, whose agronomic BRCs are at the heart of major research issues for the future. RARe brings together animal, environmental, plant, microbial and forest biological resources, with the support of the research organizations INRAE, CIRAD and IRD. This special issue "Innovations in Agricultural Resources for Research" presents a sample of the immense diversity of RARe resources.
@INRAE B. Nicolas
From genomics to ecophysiology, the Amaizing project has called on many scientific disciplines to meet the needs of the agricultural world, while finding solutions for adapting corn cultivation to climate change. Alain Charcosset, research director at UMR GQE, talks to us about ten years of research.
@ H2020 GenRes Bridge project
The Genetic Resources Strategy for Europe developed in the frame of the GenRes Bridge project will be officially launched in Brussels on 30 November 2021 09:00-13:15 CET
@INRAE 1326-062
What do the FACCE-JPI ERA-NET GrassLandScape, H2020 G2PSOL and the new H2020 AGENT projects have in common?
The CIRM-BIA (International Centre for Microbial Resources dedicated to Bacteria of Food Interest) manages a collection of approximately 4,000 bacteria of food interest.
Serge Casaregola, coordinator of the microbial pillar of RARe and current interim president of the Forum of National Coordinators (INCF) of the ESFRI MIRRI project, presented the progress of the construction phase of this project at the 38th Congress of the European Culture Collection's Organization (ECCO) held in Moscow from 13 to 15 September 2018.
