Exploring genetic diversity: New indicators proposed for animal cryobanks

This study, published in the Animal Science section of the Peer Community Journal, proposes an analytical framework and indicators for the evaluation of cryopreserved animal collections for the conservation of genetic diversity. These indicators can be calculated at regular intervals to help plan and manage these collections at national and international levels, and to help population managers exploit the resources currently available. This analytical framework has been applied to the French national cryobank.

The CRB Tournesol collection at the service of biodiversity

This is the first time that an international consortium has brought together world leaders in sunflower research in the fields of ecology, economics, genetics and biotechnology, right through to sunflower ecology and breeding. Around the Horizon Europe HelEx - Helianthus Extrêmophiles project, 18 partners will be working to develop new sunflower varieties that are more resistant to high temperatures and drought, while maintaining production quality and biodiversity services.

Rescuing a heritage treasure: the herbarium of the INRAE ASTRO research unit

The INRAE Antilles-Guyana centre has a heritage treasure consisting of a herbarium and entomological collections. The herbarium is the largest in the French West Indies, it is internationally referenced and is currently being indexed in the Index Herbariorum. On June 27, 2022, a fire broke out in the collections room over the weekend and nearly destroyed everything. However, these collections represent a strategic challenge for the setting up of a partnership between INRAE and the brand new botanical conservatory of the islands of Guadeloupe.

Soy is back!

In a context of renewed interest in the soybean species, both in terms of scientific issues and innovation, the conservation of soybean genetic resources is important. These resources have been conserved for almost two decades, thanks to the commitment of the UMR AGAP Institut . Today, the 1,300 genotypes are entrusted to the CRB housed at LIPME, and the collection is supplemented by research accessions resulting from work at IRHS.

Preserving and mobilizing agrobiodiversity to meet the major challenges facing agriculture

The ARCAD center (Agropolis Resource Centre for Crop Conservation, Adaptation and Diversity) has moved to Montpellier. Hosted by INRAE, it brings together the main plant genetic resource collections of CIRAD, IRD and INRAE in Montpellier, and combines conservation of - and research into - the diversity of Mediterranean and tropical cultivated plants.

Reintroduction of genetic diversity in populations from frozen semen: The case of Abondance, a local French dairy cattle breed

Genetic diversity is the genetic variability between individuals in the same population or between populations. In the case of livestock, breeds are often equated with populations, and the diversity they contain is essential for their evolution and adaptation. However, breeding is about selecting the best individuals and therefore does not maintain the full diversity of animals. However, it is possible to freeze semen from bulls to preserve it and potentially use it later.

The local breeds of French hens: a resource to be conserved

Within the animal pillar, a recent study published in the journal GSE highlights that many local breeds of French chickens constitute an important reservoir of neutral and adaptive diversity. They are generally free-range and territory-associated, and thus potentially adapted to a wide range of environmental conditions, which may be useful for coping with global warming and making the agro-ecological transition.

The Grassland BRC of the Plant Pillar contributes to the coordination of the maintenance of accessions of a major forage grass in European genetic resource centers

The Grassland CRB led the ImprovLoliumCol activity of the European ECPGR network whose report was published at the end of 2022. The aim of this activity was to secure the long-term maintenance and availability of a set of English ryegrass accessions available in European genetic resource centers and to document them by valorizing the results of a European network research project (GrassLandscape project). The information concerning this set of accessions has been made public by setting up a forage species portal linked to the EURISCO database.

Launch of the transfer of the collection of the CRB Vignes de Vassal

The Vassal vine collection of the RARe plant pillar represents a unique heritage in the world. The genetic resources include more than 8,500 accessions from over 50 countries. Several factors led INRAE to organize the transfer of this collection, first of all taking into account the medium-term environmental risks. The major asset of this project lies in the grouping on a unique place (Pech Rouge) of research and experimentation activities "from vine to wine" (from genetic heritage to oenological elaboration) thus offering coherence and visibility on its themes.
